Deconstructing Word Questions - Y4
The eBook Deconstructing Word Questions - Y4 supports all children to understand and break down a range of word questions. The 'slow reveal' technique gets children predicting the hidden information in a question. Visual representations highlight key ideas and help to unpick common mistakes. Then, the challenge in questioning is built step-by-step, with bar models widely used to represent questions. There are many thought-provoking extension tasks too!

This video describes how to use the tasks:

The tasks start with example questions that you can discuss as a class. When questions are first introduced, one piece of information is often hidden so children can't immediately answer the question. Can the children predict what the hidden information could be? When the numbers are revealed, children may have to decide which bar model correctly represents the question, they might be comparing two related questions, or explaining a common mistake. There are lots of open-ended questions for children to discuss and explore!

There are a wide range of discussion tasks, for example where children match questions to bar models or where they complete a bar model. Sequences of questions are provided with different levels of challenge, with scaffolds given to help children to organise calculations into steps or with pairs of questions that are 'minimally different' to compare. Then, there are a wide range of Extend tasks that provide more open-ended, deeper challenges.

I hope that Deconstructing Word Questions - Y4 helps to build all children as problem-solvers and that it gives you many fantastic classroom moments - Gareth Metcalfe
