Deconstructing Word Questions - Y2
The eBook Deconstructing Word Questions - Y2 supports all children to understand and break down different word questions. The 'slow reveal' technique gets children predicting the hidden information in a question. Visual representations highlight key ideas and help to unpick common mistakes. Then, the challenge in questioning is built step-by-step so all children are supported and stretched.

The tasks start with example questions that you can discuss as a class. When questions are first introduced, one piece of information is often hidden so children can't immediately answer the question. Can the children predict what the hidden information could be? When the numbers are revealed, children may have to represent the solutions with counters, or they might have to identify the picture that correctly represents the question. There are also lots of open-ended questions for children to discuss and explore!

There are a wide range of discussion tasks, for example where children identify the picture that represents the question or where they spot the common mistake. Sequences of questions are provided, with different levels of challenge, with many visual scaffolds given. Then, there are a wide range of Extend tasks that deepen the challenge.
