West Horsham Schools Maths Training
Friday 18th February 2022
The West Horsham Schools Network maths training event, led by Gareth Metcalfe, will now take place on Zoom. The outline for the event is given below, as well as the links to sign up for the sessions.
Deepening Understanding in KS1 Mathematics, 9:00am - 11:40am
This session will explore how reasoning and problem-solving can be built into KS1 mathematics. To start with, guidance will be shared on how to ensure that children have a deep understanding of small quantities. Then we will explore how all children can learn to reason and problem-solve. We will look at how problem-solving can be made accessible whilst also giving children the opportunity to work at greater depth.
The session will be broken down as follows:
9:00am - 10:10am: Reasoning mathematically within early calculation using visual representations and effective talk strategies.
10:10am - 10:30am: Break
10:30 - 11:40 Building children as problem solvers by deconstructing problem-solving and using purposefully sequenced tasks.
Reasoning and Problem-Solving in KS2 Mathematics, 1:00pm - 3:20pm
In this session, we will look at how reasoning can be built within sequences of lessons and how to systematically build children's problem-solving skills.
The session will be broken down as follows:
1:00pm - 2:10pm: Building reasoning routines to ensure that children think deeply throughout sequences of learning.
2:10pm - 2:30pm: Break
2:30pm - 3:40pm: Building KS2 problem solvers using numberless prompts, variation in questioning and by creating purposefully sequenced problem-solving tasks.
